Humboldt County Weather Patterns

Mild Coastal Climate

One of the most important things to note about Humboldt County is that it is a coastal climate caused by the Pacific Ocean that runs along it's western edge. The majority of the cities in Northern Humboldt are therefore very stable climates with temperatures that range between 40-80 degrees all year round . It will be a bit hotter in the summer (65-80) and cooler in the winter (40-55). Most nights will require some sort of light coat or hoodie (even in the middle of the summer) since the nighttime ocean breezes often cool the county.

Most of Southern Humboldt is quite a bit inland and so those cities do see a wider variation in temperatures from the high 80s to just below freezing at times. Summer spikes in temperature can reach into the high 90s or even 100s. If you go inland especially towards Willow Creek you will see much more typical weather patterns with snow in the winter and high 90s in the summer. This can be a convenient respite from the cooler summer temperatures or those seeking snow.

Seasonal Rains

As with much of northern california the seasonal rains are an important factor in Humboldt County life. Between June and October there will be virtually no rain at all leaving a very dry day that is moderated at night with coastal fog. From mid October to Mid May you should expect to see some rain with January and February being assured of rainy weather. The rains are often light but prolonged and steady drizzles. These rains will not stop you from enjoying outdoors activites provided you have some raingear.

Fog

With the close proximity to the ocean, fog will pretty much be assured at some point in your trip. It is these fogs that create the beautiful Redwoods that so many will enjoy. The fogs can be dense at times (especially in the winter) or just light clouds that hover in the trees. It is a very beautiful site to watch the fog roll in at night during the late summer and fall months. The fog is also often thicker on the cliffsides as it is with Patrick's Point Drive and Trinidad. Day time visits to Pacific Ocean overlooks will ensure the best chance to see the beautiful ocean views.
