Humboldt County runs it's entire western edge along the Pacific Ocean. In the South these areas are remote and require mountain pass traverses. This area is also known as the Lost Coast. In the Central Humboldt County and Humboldt Bay there are numerous rivers meeting the ocean with sand dunes and long sandy beaches. In the North are scenic cliffs and Old Growth Redwood groves.
Agate Beach
Agate Beach is one of main attractions at Patrick's Point State Beach. There is a several hundred foot hike down onto the beach from the park's primary plateau above. The beach is covered in tiny colored pebbles and give it a natural heat that is lovely when the rest of the park is chilly. Natural agates can also be found on this beach, especially after winter storms. The agates originate from an dormant, prehistoric igneous source in Oregon.
Mad River Beach Park
The Mad River Beach Park is the ideal access route to the longest stretch of pacific ocean beach in Humboldt County. You can get to the park by following Mad River Beach Park Road and the signs off of Guintoli / Janes Rd. Hours of use are 5am to Midnight with no overnight camping. Good for dogs, running, beach fires, shell and rock hunting.
Moonstone Beach
Moonstone Beach is a large open beach just south of Trinidad on Scenic Drive or you can get off on the Westhaven exit of Highway 101. Good place for a picnic. The Moonstone Grill is located there. There are gigantic black rocks on the beach and the Little River that often divides access to parts of the beach.
