There are several areas in Humboldt County where unique wildlife can be viewed. In the Redwood National Park there are Elk herds. Many migratory birds also visit the area. In additional there are numerous ocean mammals like seals, otters and of course whale migrations to check out.

The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the City of Arcata’s innovative wastewater treatment facility. By integrating its conventional wastewater treatment with the natural treatment processes of constructed wetlands Arcata has succeeded in turning its treated wastewater into a resource. The sanctuary includes 307 acres of freshwater marshes, salt marsh with tidal slough, grassy uplands, tidal mudflats, brackish marsh, 5.4 miles of walking and biking paths and an Interpretive Center that serve over 150.000 visitors every year.

Six Rivers National Forest ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

There are Six major rivers within Humboldt County along with several other smaller ones. These include from North to South : the Trinity River in Willow Creek, the Little River south of Trinidad, the Mad River in Blue Lake and Arcata, the Van Duzer River in the Central Valley, several forks of the Eel River throughout Southern Humboldt, and the Mateel River in SoHum as well. There is also the Six Rivers National Forest that runs along the eastern side of the County.

As you head out of Blue Lake on the south end you pass the Mad River. There are some small pull-offs to enjoy the river. You can also turn onto the West End Road that meanders at 25 mph through small farms and glimpses of the Mad River. The Mad River Pumphouse is along this route with a community park and disc golf course. In Arcata, West End Road is a small industrial, commercial park with lots of manufacturers, construction companies and other commercial businesses.

The whale watching season begins just after the camping season ends. The best time to look for whales in California is December through March, the annual migration of grey whales swim 6,000 miles south from Alaskan waters along California's coastline to their breeding waters in Baja California, Mexico. Groups of whales stay close to the shoreline to avoid predators and will travel up 70 to 80 miles daily. The State Parks in Humboldt County are some of the best places to see a whale blow his steam. Great locations are Humboldt Lagoons State Park, Patrick's Point State Park and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. There are also locations and festivals in Mendocino County to the south. You will find outfitters in especially Trinidad that specifically deal with Whale Watching.
