Garberville and Redway are sister cities that comprise the major towns in Southern Humboldt. These are the 2 primary towns for any lodging, dining, shopping and services in So Hum. Garberville is a strip town with stores, restaruants and motels dotted all along it's main drag. Redway is a smaller town with some grocery and shopping options. It is also home to the popular Mateel Community Center.

Much of this route was originally intended to be a part of State Route 1 from Rockport in Mendocino County to Ferndale in Central Humboldt County. The traversable route in northern Mendocino and southern Humboldt counties is Chemise Mountain Road, Wilder Ridge Road, Kings Peak Road and Mattole Road. Entrances to this southern route are from Ferndale in the North, Bluff Creek Flats Road off Hwy 101 at the Humboldt Redwoods State Park or from Briceland Thorne Road out of Redway.

Nestled in the valley of the Eel River between Redwoods and the Lost Coast of northern California is the Southern Humboldt Community Park. Located just outside Garberville, California the unique natural beauty of this 431-acre park with grasslands, upland forests, prime farmland and native redwoods inspires deep appreciation and reverence for nature.
The Park features 3.5 miles of multi-use trails for strolling, hiking, nature-viewing, bird-watching, bicycling, and horse-back riding. With the “Wild and Scenic” South Fork of the Eel River flowing through its boundaries, the Community Park also offers access to much needed recreational opportunities including swimming, canoeing, disc golf, a meditation labyrinth along with a riverside playground and picnic area. The Community Park is also a favorite location for community get-togethers in a variety of beautiful settings.
