The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the City of Arcata’s innovative wastewater treatment facility. By integrating its conventional wastewater treatment with the natural treatment processes of constructed wetlands Arcata has succeeded in turning its treated wastewater into a resource. The sanctuary includes 307 acres of freshwater marshes, salt marsh with tidal slough, grassy uplands, tidal mudflats, brackish marsh, 5.4 miles of walking and biking paths and an Interpretive Center that serve over 150.000 visitors every year.

Headwaters Forest ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

The Headwaters Forest Reserve is 7,472 acres of public land located 6 miles southeast of Eureka, CA. The reserve is set aside to protect and preserve the ecological and wildlife values in the area, particularly the stands of old-growth redwood that provide habitat for the threatened marbled murrelet, and the stream systems that provide habitat for threatened coho salmon. The northern end of the Headwaters Forest Reserve is open to the public for day use only, from dawn to dusk. The south end of the reserve can be accessed through guided hikes conducted between mid-May through mid-November (for more detailed information please see the links below). You are invited to take some time and enjoy the natural and historic values of this unique area.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park encompasses nearly 53,000 acres, of which over 17,000 are untouched old growth coast redwoods. Created in 1921 with the small Bolling Memorial Grove the park has grown over the years to include a diverse ecosystem including the entire Bull Creek watershed and the Rockefeller Forest, the largest remaining old growth redwood forest in the world. This is the third largest California State Park and protects an environment unique to anywhere else on earth. A wide variety of activities and facilities are available. There are over 250 family campsites in three different campgrounds, plus environmental camps, group camps, trail camps, and a horse camp. Over 100 miles of trail await exploration by hikers, bikers, and horse riders. The South Fork Eel River provides fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities, and there are many day use areas for picnicking, family activities, or for just enjoying the pristine environment.

Indeed, there are 420 and 215 friendly stores throughout Humboldt County. Much of this is due to the passage of California State Proposition 215 in 1996 that allowed for the compassionate use of cannabis. There is also a long history of the San Francisco Hippies having moved into especially the southen hills of Humboldt where they began growing marijuana. Garberville in SoHum and Arcata in NoHum are the two best locations to seek your goods. The legal status of the flower is in a permanent gray area since the election of the new government in 2008. Since 2005, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has been working cooperatively with mountain biking advocates and clubs, such as the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), to plan, develop, and construct an environmentally sustainable, challenging mountain bike trail system in the Paradise Ridge area of the King Range National Conservation Area, situated near 2850' high Queen Peak, north of Shelter Cove Road. The proposed system will include 30 miles of trails encompassing varying levels of difficulty and diverse scenic vistas, terrain features and riding experiences. The trail system will provide mountain biking opportunities in a region where legal, single-track mountain biking-specific trails do not exist on public lands.

These include from North to South : the Trinity River in Willow Creek, the Little River south of Trinidad, the Mad River in Blue Lake and Arcata, the Van Duzer River in the Central Valley, several forks of the Eel River throughout Southern Humboldt, and the Mateel River in SoHum as well. There is also the Six Rivers National Forest that runs along the eastern side of the County.
