Avenue of the Giants - State Route 254

There are many natural wonders in Humboldt. Some of them simply must be seen to fully understand the natural beauty, serenity and admiration that they inspire. Some of them like Fern Canyon or the Mad River Headwaters are a bit hard to reach but they are well worth the journey.

Avenue of the Giants - State Route 254 ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

Route 254, also called the Avenue of the Giants, is the old Redwood Highway that goes through several central Humboldt County towns running parallel to Highway 101. The 31 mile route is dotted with groves of Redwood Trees that are part of Humboldt Redwood State Park. Most of the route also runs beside the scenic Eel River with lots of cool pullovers and picnic locales.

Headwaters Forest ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

The Headwaters Forest Reserve is 7,472 acres of public land located 6 miles southeast of Eureka, CA. The reserve is set aside to protect and preserve the ecological and wildlife values in the area, particularly the stands of old-growth redwood that provide habitat for the threatened marbled murrelet, and the stream systems that provide habitat for threatened coho salmon. The northern end of the Headwaters Forest Reserve is open to the public for day use only, from dawn to dusk. The south end of the reserve can be accessed through guided hikes conducted between mid-May through mid-November (for more detailed information please see the links below). You are invited to take some time and enjoy the natural and historic values of this unique area.

Pacific Ocean Overlooks ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

There are a couple of great places to see the Pacific Ocean without having to hike very far. Trinidad is the best location to get a good overlook of the Pacific Ocean. The westside of McKinleyville is also nice. The hills that go up above Arcata like Fickle Hill, Jacoby Creek and Kneeland will provide stunning views of the bay. As you leave Eureka the Ocean is harder to see. Awesome views can be seen in parts of the Lost Coast especially heading south from Ferndale on route 211.
