Routes and Regions | The Lost Coast
The Lost Coast is a region of Humboldt County that runs along the Pacific Ocean on the South end of the county. The beaches and terrain require mountain passes to reach. Some areas of the Lost Coast can only be reached by off-road means like parts of the King Range National Conservation Area. This also geographically isolates Shelter Cove from everywhere else.

Shelter Cove is a remote seaside town in the very southwest corner of Humboldt County. It can only be reached by one major road (although the interesting secret stretch of CA Route 1 exists) or by boat or airplane. It is a relatively wealthy area compared to the rest of Humboldt County. The movie Homegrown was based in Shelter Cove.

King Range National Conservation Area in Humboldt County, CA

The King Range NCA covers 68,000 acres and extends along 35 miles of coastline between the mouth of the Mattole River and Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. Here the landscape was too rugged for highway building, forcing State Highway 1 and U.S. 101 inland. The remote region is known as California's Lost Coast, and is only accessed by a few back roads. The recreation opportunities here are as diverse as the landscape. The Douglas-fir peaks attract hikers, hunters, campers and mushroom collectors, while the coast beckons to surfers, anglers, beachcombers, and abalone divers to name a few.

Humboldt County runs it's entire western edge along the Pacific Ocean. In the South these areas are remote and require mountain pass traverses. This area is also known as the Lost Coast. In the Central Humboldt County and Humboldt Bay there are numerous rivers meeting the ocean with sand dunes and long sandy beaches. In the North are scenic cliffs and Old Growth Redwood groves.

There are a couple of great places to see the Pacific Ocean without having to hike very far. Trinidad is the best location to get a good overlook of the Pacific Ocean. The westside of McKinleyville is also nice. The hills that go up above Arcata like Fickle Hill, Jacoby Creek and Kneeland will provide stunning views of the bay. As you leave Eureka the Ocean is harder to see. Awesome views can be seen in parts of the Lost Coast especially heading south from Ferndale on route 211.

Since 2005, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has been working cooperatively with mountain biking advocates and clubs, such as the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), to plan, develop, and construct an environmentally sustainable, challenging mountain bike trail system in the Paradise Ridge area of the King Range National Conservation Area, situated near 2850' high Queen Peak, north of Shelter Cove Road. The proposed system will include 30 miles of trails encompassing varying levels of difficulty and diverse scenic vistas, terrain features and riding experiences. The trail system will provide mountain biking opportunities in a region where legal, single-track mountain biking-specific trails do not exist on public lands.

Much of this route was originally intended to be a part of State Route 1 from Rockport in Mendocino County to Ferndale in Central Humboldt County. The traversable route in northern Mendocino and southern Humboldt counties is Chemise Mountain Road, Wilder Ridge Road, Kings Peak Road and Mattole Road. Entrances to this southern route are from Ferndale in the North, Bluff Creek Flats Road off Hwy 101 at the Humboldt Redwoods State Park or from Briceland Thorne Road out of Redway.
