Routes and Regions | Southern Humboldt
Southern Humboldt is located in the hills around Highway 101 in the south of Humboldt County. It's a popular home to the Mateel Community of old hippies and mountain farmers. It is also the location of sister towns Garberville and Redway. Over the eastern hills are the towns of Petrolia, Briceland, Whitethorn, Shelter Cove and more.

Route 254, also called the Avenue of the Giants, is the old Redwood Highway that goes through several central Humboldt County towns running parallel to Highway 101. The 31 mile route is dotted with groves of Redwood Trees that are part of Humboldt Redwood State Park. Most of the route also runs beside the scenic Eel River with lots of cool pullovers and picnic locales.

The Benbow Lake drive goes through the Benbow Lake State Recreation Area on both sides of Highway 101 in Southern Humboldt. You can get off the highway at Benbow Lake Drive 2 miles south of Garberville. On the route there is also the Benbow Lake Inn and Resort with a five-star hotel and golf course.

Nestled in the valley of the Eel River between Redwoods and the Lost Coast of northern California is the Southern Humboldt Community Park. Located just outside Garberville, California the unique natural beauty of this 431-acre park with grasslands, upland forests, prime farmland and native redwoods inspires deep appreciation and reverence for nature.
The Park features 3.5 miles of multi-use trails for strolling, hiking, nature-viewing, bird-watching, bicycling, and horse-back riding. With the “Wild and Scenic” South Fork of the Eel River flowing through its boundaries, the Community Park also offers access to much needed recreational opportunities including swimming, canoeing, disc golf, a meditation labyrinth along with a riverside playground and picnic area. The Community Park is also a favorite location for community get-togethers in a variety of beautiful settings.
