Routes and Regions | Humboldt Bay

humboldt-bay-sunset.jpg

Several of the northern Humboldt County towns are located on the Humboldt Bay. These include Arcata, Eureka, Manila, Samoa and Fields Landing. This was the first part of Humboldt County to be discovered due to the access by sea. There are several natural areas on the bay including the Arcata Marsh, the Eureka Slough as well as the Manila and Samoa Sand Dunes.

We'd like to thank Bill at HighBoltage for this stunning photo of the bay.

Fort Humboldt State Historical Park in Humboldt County, CA
Sort by Town | Sort by Alpha

Fort Humboldt State Historical Park     ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

Fort Humboldt is situated on a bluff overlooking Humboldt Bay. This remote military post was established in 1853 to assist in conflict resolution between Native Americans and gold-seekers and settlers who had begun flooding into the area after the discovery of gold in the northern mines. Later, Fort Humboldt would become the headquarters for the Humboldt Military District, which included Forts Bragg and Wright in northern Mendocino County, extending north through Humboldt County to Fort Ter-Waw in Klamath and Camp Lincoln near present-day Crescent City. It was during its first few years that Fort Humboldt saw one of its most famous residents: the young Captain Ulysses S. Grant. After being decorated for bravery in the Mexican-American war, he was posted to several locations including Fort Vancouver in the Pacific Northwest. The isolation of Fort Humboldt did not appeal to Grant, and after serving as commanding officer of Company F for six months, resigned his commission. Fort Humboldt was formally abandoned in 1870 and rapidly fell into decay. Today, only the hospital building remains out of the original fourteen structures. It is now a historical museum dedicated to telling the story of the Fort and the Native American groups, including the Wiyot, Hoopa and Yurok of this region. In the 1980s the Surgeon’s Quarters was reconstructed and there are plans for its establishment as a period house museum. In 2001 an historic herb and vegetable garden was recreated adjacent to the Hospital.

Highway 101 Safety Corridor     ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

The Highway 101 Safety Corridor is the 5 mile stretch of highway between Arcata and Eureka that coasts along the Humboldt Bay. You can watch the tides rising in and out by watching the level of the shallow bay. Speed limits were reduced on this stretch of highway to aid the Indianola and Bayside Cutoffs. Those getting in and out of the dangerous turn in for the KOA will appreciate this. Most others have more than nice words about the sometimes seemingly endless traverse.

Pacific Ocean Overlooks     ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

There are a couple of great places to see the Pacific Ocean without having to hike very far. Trinidad is the best location to get a good overlook of the Pacific Ocean. The westside of McKinleyville is also nice. The hills that go up above Arcata like Fickle Hill, Jacoby Creek and Kneeland will provide stunning views of the bay. As you leave Eureka the Ocean is harder to see. Awesome views can be seen in parts of the Lost Coast especially heading south from Ferndale on route 211.

Route 255 - Samoa Blvd     ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

This route pretty much circles the Humboldt Bay on three sides. It starts in Arcata on Samoa Blvd (4th Street). From there you will pass what are referred to as the Bottoms where lots of cows now enjoy their days. Once you pass a small bridge you will see a lumber mill and that means you're in Manila. Manila is a strip town that runs until the Humboldt Bay Bridge turn-off. If you take the bridge you will have a scenic drive over the Humboldt Bay. Keep going straight and you'll run into the town of Samoa and the Samoa Dunes Recreation Area. This is also where the mouth of the Jetty is.

Surfing     ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

There are surfing locations in several parts of Humboldt County. The Humboldt Bay, Trinidad and parts of the Lost Coast are the usual spots. Locals guard there favorite spots like Buddhist Monks. Conditions in the cold water can be either really good or really bad. The coast is pretty rocky with cliffs past McKinleyville. There are a lot of HSU students who surf the waters similar to Santa Cruz. Winter and spring are best but the waves can be pretty rough. Surfline has a great summary.
