Humboldt County has a vast natural beauty of Redwood Trees, Pacific Ocean Beaches, Rivers, Valleys, Hills and Mountains. There are a wide selection of outdoor sports, backwoods adventures and scenic locations to enjoy in this part of Northern California. It is also a great place to camp or lodge when traveling along the Highway 1/101 Route.

Campgrounds are available in many parts of Humboldt County. Camping is easiest to find where the State and Local parks are located, for instance Patricks Point State Park (PPSP) in Trinidad or the Humboldt Redwoods State Park (HRSP) along the Avenue of the Giants. Camping can also be found just outside Eureka and Arcata as well as in the Six Rivers National Forest (SRNF) near Willow Creek. There are also several parks spread out through Southern Humboldt. Many campsites now take reservations ahead so you should especially make arrangements in advance.

Disc Golf in Humboldt County, CA

Disc Golf     ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

There are over half a dozen disc golf courses in the county. Most famous of these is the Redwood Curtain in Arcata by HSU. There is also a course on the Mad River between Arcata and Blue Lake. Another course is at the county park in Manila. Other courses are at CR, the Canopy by Tooby Park in Garberville and some more private lands near Willow Creek.

There is plenty of fishing to be found in Humboldt County with the six major rivers and the Pacific Ocean that runs the length. Salmon are the most popular fish in the area. Ocean fishing can be found out of Trinidad, Eureka or Shelter Cove.

Hiking is a popular activity in all of Humboldt County. Trails are especially nice in all of the state parks and Redwood National Park. There are also lots of local parks, ocean beaches and remote wilderness hills to roam around. During the fall months it is best to know where you are headed, stay on the trails and stay off any private properties.

Pacific Ocean Beaches in Humboldt County, CA

Pacific Ocean Beaches     ( VIEW FULL PAGE )

Humboldt County runs it's entire western edge along the Pacific Ocean. In the South these areas are remote and require mountain pass traverses. This area is also known as the Lost Coast. In the Central Humboldt County and Humboldt Bay there are numerous rivers meeting the ocean with sand dunes and long sandy beaches. In the North are scenic cliffs and Old Growth Redwood groves.

There are surfing locations in several parts of Humboldt County. The Humboldt Bay, Trinidad and parts of the Lost Coast are the usual spots. Locals guard there favorite spots like Buddhist Monks. Conditions in the cold water can be either really good or really bad. The coast is pretty rocky with cliffs past McKinleyville. There are a lot of HSU students who surf the waters similar to Santa Cruz. Winter and spring are best but the waves can be pretty rough. Surfline has a great summary.
